Graphene and graphene derivatives have a great potential in revolutionizing modern world technologies, from energy industry to medicine. Although graphene itself poses very interesting chemical and physical properties, such as unparalleled strength, high carrier mobility or good electrical conductivity, combining it with other materials like plasmonic nanoparticles can result in new, even more interesting properties due to synergistic effect.

Here I present a method of combining various plasmonic nanoparticles with reduced graphene oxide derivative (rGO).

Figure 1 – Concept of cheap and easy rGO-nanoparticles synthesis method.

Graphene oxide was obtained from powdered graphite by oxidative exfoliation. After that, GO was reduced and its surface was modified with carboxyl groups. Such material was then covered with nanoparticles by either forming amide bond with amine group on the nanoparticle ligand or by hydrogen bonding.

Synthesized materials can have potential applications in enhancing SERS signal (Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy), thus acting as an active surface and making this analytic technique even more sensitive. Furthermore, research presented here can be useful in synthesizing different kind of hybrid materials based on graphene.
