Konwersatorium im. Jerzego Pniewskiego-Wydział Fizyki 23.04.2018

Uprzejmie zawiadamiamy, że w dniu 23 kwietnia 2018 roku o godz 16:30, w sali 0.03 Wydziału Fizyki UW, ul. Pasteura 5 odbędzie się konwersatorium im. Jerzego Pniewskiego, na którym prof. Władysław Minor (University of Virginia, USA) wygłosi referat zatytułowany: „A Physicist’s Adventure in a Structural Biology World”.

Od godz. 16 zapraszamy uczestników na kawę i nieformalne dyskusje do holu przed salą 0.03.

Abstract:
Twentieth-century science was dominated by progress in physics. It seems that 21st-century science will be ruled by biomedically oriented research, in which structural biology will play a leading role. Structural biology can be thought of as an engine of biomedical research, because the investigation of molecular structures and the dynamics of biological macromolecules underlies many biomedical disciplines. The methodologies developed by physicists, including alumni of the Faculty of Physics of the University of Warsaw, transformed structural biology and have led to the structure determination of tens of thousands of proteins. Structural information has paved the way for modern, structure-guided drug discovery and laid the foundations for structural bioinformatics. Structural biology has been, and will continue to serve as, the central source of experimental information used in the discovery of new drugs. The bottlenecks on the path from protein structure to a new drug will be discussed.
