ECHE awarded to UW

The University of Warsaw is the most active Polish university regarding the mobility of students and employees. The European Commission awarded UW with the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE). The document allows higher education institutions to apply and participate in the Erasmus+ programme for education, training, youth and sport 2021-2027.

UW has participated in the Erasmus programme since 1998. Erasmus+ offers mobility and cooperation opportunities for students, doctoral candidates, employees and graduates of higher education institutions. More information >>

The Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) provides the general quality framework for European and international cooperation activities a higher education institution may carry out within Erasmus+. It aims to reinforce the quality of student and staff mobility, as well as cooperation projects.

The ECHE principles have been adapted to respond to the novelties of the Erasmus+ programme 2021-2027, e.g. digitalisation, inclusion and sustainability.

Higher education institutions need to comply with the requirements of the Council Recommendation on automatic mutual recognition, to ensure the full automatic recognition of learning periods abroad in the smoothest way possible and without the student having to do any extra coursework or exam.

Erasmus Charter for Higher Education principles

“The Institution undertakes to: 

  • Respect in full the principles of non-discrimination, transparency and inclusion set out in the Programme
  • Ensure equal and equitable access and opportunities to current and prospective participants from all backgrounds, paying particular attention to the inclusion of those with fewer opportunities.
  • Ensure full automatic recognition of all credits (based on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System – ECTS) gained for learning outcomes satisfactorily achieved during a period of study/training abroad, including during blended mobility.
  • Charge no fees, in the case of credit mobility, to incoming mobile students for tuition, registration, examinations or access to laboratory and library facilities.
  • Ensure the quality of the mobility activities and the cooperation projects throughout the application and implementation phases.”

The Senate of the University of Warsaw adopted the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education principles on 2nd July.

The Erasmus+ programme has set the following specific objectivesfor the 2021-2027 period:

  • Promote learning mobility of individuals and groups, as well as cooperation, quality, inclusion and equity, excellence, creativity and innovation at the level of organisations and policies in the field of education and training;
  • Promote non-formal and informal learning mobility and active participation among young people, as well as cooperation, quality, inclusion, creativity and innovation at the level of organisations and policies in the field of youth;
  • Promote learning mobility of sport staff, as well as cooperation, quality, inclusion, creativity and innovation at the level of sport organisations and sport policies.

20 years of the Erasmus programme at UW (1998-2018) in numbers:

  • 24 965 out-going students, doctoral candidates and employees;
  • 8 515 incoming students;
  • 500 partner universities from abroad;
  • 1 100 companies and institutions in cooperaion with UW;
  • 2 million euro and 7.9 million zloty mobility budget;
  • 100 UW mobility coordinators who manage Erasmus mobilities at UW faculties and units.

University of Warsaw Annual Report 2020

The University of Warsaw Annual Report 2020 is out. It includes significant data on UW, e.g. research and teaching activities, international collaboration, academic exchange, relations with the socio-economic environment, finances and university investments. The UW Executive Summary and annexes are available in English. The Senate of the University of Warsaw adopted the document.

On 2nd July, the Senate of the University of Warsaw unanimously adopted the report featuring UW’s operation under special conditions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The report covers the perspective of two terms of office: Prof. Marcin Pałys, who managed the university from 2012 to 2020, and Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, who on 1st September 2020 took up the position of Rector of the University of Warsaw.

The most important statistics

In 2020, the university community comprised 40 247 students and 2 435 doctoral candidates, including 3 810 from abroad, and diplomas were awarded to 8 933 graduates. The University of Warsaw employs 7 678 people, including 3 894 academic teachers (531 professors). 32 900 candidates, including 2 440 from abroad, applied for admission to 1st, 2nd and uniform Master’s degree studies.

Researchers participated in 96 projects financed by the Horizon 2020 programme (including European Research Grants: six ongoing and three newly awarded to UW academ[1]ics; 26 grants from the European Institute of Innovation and Technology) and 1 339 projects financed from national research grants. In 2020, university revenues amounted to PLN 1,7 billion.

The university worked together with over 580 international entities from over 80 countries under direct bilateral cooperation agreements.

An exceptional year

The entire academic community was involved to ensure the continuity of education and operation of UW. With a few exceptions, until the end of 2020, university staff and students worked online. The summer exam session, the end of the academic year, admissions, and the commencement of teaching activities in the 2020/2021 academic year were all postponed. Due to the pandemic, support schemes for the academic community were introduced at the university, including teaching, remote education, and the development of IT tools for management of the university, as well as psychological support. Since June 2020, employees and doctoral candidates of the University of Warsaw have been offered free tests for the presence of coronavirus antibodies and for active infection with SARS-CoV-2.

Guide to the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at UW

The University of Warsaw published a “Guide to the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at the University of Warsaw”. The document is now available online in English and contains a list of rules and procedures at the UW, as well as recommendations and advice on preventing and reacting in situations of sexual harassment.

The guide and its recommendations and procedures reflect the ethical standards of the University of Warsaw, including mutual respect and equal treatment of all members of the academic community and non-acceptance of sexual harassment.

Treating people with mutual respect is a fundamental principle of the University of Warsaw community. Every person should feel safe studying and working on our campus. Sexual harassment is against the law because it is a form of discrimination on the grounds of gender. It is also against the values of University of Warsaw – indicate the authors of the publication.

The guide provides information on:

  • Definitions and examples of sexual harassment,
  • What to do when experienced sexual harassment or witnessed it,
  • The possibility of obtaining support, methods and procedures for reporting sexual harassment to university institutions,
  • Inappropriate and forbidden emotional and intimate relationships at the university.

The publication “Guide to the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at the University of Warsaw” was prepared by:

Earlier this year, University of Warsaw adopted its Gender Equality Plan – an action strategy for UW in the years 2020-2023. The document was created as a result of expert consultations reflecting good practices from European institutions. UW was the first university in Poland to adopt the GEP. The strategy envisages the implementation of the Anti-Discrimination Procedure, which will enable formal complaint proceedings both by the person who has experienced discrimination and by heads of the units to ensure safe reporting and prevention of sexual harassment and discrimination. More information >>

Workshops on public speaking

On 13th-14th July, Welcome Point organizes new workshops “The art of public speaking”. UW students who are interested in the topic can register by 4th July. 

During a two-day event, UW students will learn how to use argumentation techniques, formulate the purpose of the speech, make a speech plan, or engage the audience, etc.

The workshops will be held on 13th-14th July, from 10:00 am. to 1:30 pm.

Attendance during two days of workshops is required. Qualified students will receive a link to the meeting.

Who can participate?

  • BA students of 2nd and 3rd year,
  • long term students of 4th and 5th year of uniform Master studies,
  • MA students.

UW in rankings

On 22nd June, the results of Perspektywy Ranking 2021 were out. The 23 study programmes run by UW were recognised as best in Poland. UW came second in the ranking of the best universities in the country, following the Jagiellonian University.

Since the beginning of the ranking, the University of Warsaw and the Jagiellonian University (JU) have taken the first two places: UW occupied the first place ten times, and JU nine times. In 2015 and 2017-2018, both universities shared the first place equally.

Perspektywy Ranking by Subject

UW was ranked first in this year’s edition of the Perspektywy Ranking by Subject. The 23 study programmes were considered as best in Poland: Archaeology, Astronomy, Biology (UW and JU equally), Economics, Education, Journalism and Communication, Polish Studies, Physics, Geography (UW and Adam Mickiewicz University equally), Geology, History, Internal Security, Computer Science, Cultural Studies, Mathematics, Environmental Protection (UW and Adam Mickiewicz University equally), Political Science, Law (UW and JU equally), Psychology, Sociology, International Relations, and Management (UW and Koźmiński University equally).

According to Perspektywy, the 17 best study programmes are run by Warsaw University of Technology and 15 by the Jagiellonian University.

Over the last months, the results of the most prestigious international rankings were published, e.g. QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education, Shanghai’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects and QS World University Rankings by Subject. In January, UW has been ranked 123rd in a ranking featuring 172 the most international universities in the world in 2021. The ranking was compiled using data from the Times Higher World University Rankings. More information >>

In March, the University of Warsaw has been named as one of the world’s top universities for the study of 19 subjects, according to the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021. The University of Warsaw’s best performance is in Archaeology, Modern Languages, and Philosophy. More information >>

In May, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), compiled by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, was out. Mathematics and Physics, run by the University of Warsaw, were ranked 76-100. Also, nine other UW subjects were included in the ranking. More information >>

UW’s operation as of 1st July

On 18th June, Prof. Alojzy Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw, has issued an ordinance on the operation of UW in the state of the COVID-19 epidemic. As of 1st July 2021, UW returns to on-site functioning.

As Poland’s epidemic situation has improved, COVID-19 vaccines widely available, and the restrictions have been eased, the UW Rector has issued the ordinance on the functioning of the University of Warsaw in the state of the COVID-19 epidemic.

The document includes information on the return to the university’s on-site operation, doctoral examinations, and the organisation of summer schools, team-building meetings and meetings of university bodies.

As of 1st July, the following regulations will apply:

  • UW operates under general rules – on-site. In justified cases, remote work, and online meetings of certain bodies at the University of Warsaw, are possible.
  • UW academic community members and visitors must obey all the hygienic and sanitary regulations. They result from the applicable provisions of law and the recommendations and guidelines of the Chief Sanitary Inspector.
  • Individuals with possible symptoms of COVID-19 and individuals who live in the same household with someone with COVID-19 are not permitted to stay at the UW premises.
  • Public events, meetings, gatherings, open lectures, conferences, courses and training may be held on-site with the permission of heads of unites or Chancellor. 
  • Summer schools, camps, and meetings may take place on-site in compliance with sanitary and hygienic requirements.
  • The University of Warsaw Library and other libraries make their collections accessible to users, complying with sanitary and hygienic requirements. If there are technical possibilities, libraries may operate in self-service mode.

The organisation of classes being part of the 1st, 2nd and long-cycle study programmes, doctoral studies, programmes in doctoral schools, postgraduate studies, courses and training is regulated by separate regulations.
