ECHE awarded to UW

The University of Warsaw is the most active Polish university regarding the mobility of students and employees. The European Commission awarded UW with the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE). The document allows higher education institutions to apply and participate in the Erasmus+ programme for education, training, youth and sport 2021-2027.

UW has participated in the Erasmus programme since 1998. Erasmus+ offers mobility and cooperation opportunities for students, doctoral candidates, employees and graduates of higher education institutions. More information >>

The Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) provides the general quality framework for European and international cooperation activities a higher education institution may carry out within Erasmus+. It aims to reinforce the quality of student and staff mobility, as well as cooperation projects.

The ECHE principles have been adapted to respond to the novelties of the Erasmus+ programme 2021-2027, e.g. digitalisation, inclusion and sustainability.

Higher education institutions need to comply with the requirements of the Council Recommendation on automatic mutual recognition, to ensure the full automatic recognition of learning periods abroad in the smoothest way possible and without the student having to do any extra coursework or exam.

Erasmus Charter for Higher Education principles

“The Institution undertakes to: 

  • Respect in full the principles of non-discrimination, transparency and inclusion set out in the Programme
  • Ensure equal and equitable access and opportunities to current and prospective participants from all backgrounds, paying particular attention to the inclusion of those with fewer opportunities.
  • Ensure full automatic recognition of all credits (based on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System – ECTS) gained for learning outcomes satisfactorily achieved during a period of study/training abroad, including during blended mobility.
  • Charge no fees, in the case of credit mobility, to incoming mobile students for tuition, registration, examinations or access to laboratory and library facilities.
  • Ensure the quality of the mobility activities and the cooperation projects throughout the application and implementation phases.”

The Senate of the University of Warsaw adopted the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education principles on 2nd July.

The Erasmus+ programme has set the following specific objectivesfor the 2021-2027 period:

  • Promote learning mobility of individuals and groups, as well as cooperation, quality, inclusion and equity, excellence, creativity and innovation at the level of organisations and policies in the field of education and training;
  • Promote non-formal and informal learning mobility and active participation among young people, as well as cooperation, quality, inclusion, creativity and innovation at the level of organisations and policies in the field of youth;
  • Promote learning mobility of sport staff, as well as cooperation, quality, inclusion, creativity and innovation at the level of sport organisations and sport policies.

20 years of the Erasmus programme at UW (1998-2018) in numbers:

  • 24 965 out-going students, doctoral candidates and employees;
  • 8 515 incoming students;
  • 500 partner universities from abroad;
  • 1 100 companies and institutions in cooperaion with UW;
  • 2 million euro and 7.9 million zloty mobility budget;
  • 100 UW mobility coordinators who manage Erasmus mobilities at UW faculties and units.

University of Warsaw Annual Report 2020

The University of Warsaw Annual Report 2020 is out. It includes significant data on UW, e.g. research and teaching activities, international collaboration, academic exchange, relations with the socio-economic environment, finances and university investments. The UW Executive Summary and annexes are available in English. The Senate of the University of Warsaw adopted the document.

On 2nd July, the Senate of the University of Warsaw unanimously adopted the report featuring UW’s operation under special conditions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The report covers the perspective of two terms of office: Prof. Marcin Pałys, who managed the university from 2012 to 2020, and Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, who on 1st September 2020 took up the position of Rector of the University of Warsaw.

The most important statistics

In 2020, the university community comprised 40 247 students and 2 435 doctoral candidates, including 3 810 from abroad, and diplomas were awarded to 8 933 graduates. The University of Warsaw employs 7 678 people, including 3 894 academic teachers (531 professors). 32 900 candidates, including 2 440 from abroad, applied for admission to 1st, 2nd and uniform Master’s degree studies.

Researchers participated in 96 projects financed by the Horizon 2020 programme (including European Research Grants: six ongoing and three newly awarded to UW academ[1]ics; 26 grants from the European Institute of Innovation and Technology) and 1 339 projects financed from national research grants. In 2020, university revenues amounted to PLN 1,7 billion.

The university worked together with over 580 international entities from over 80 countries under direct bilateral cooperation agreements.

An exceptional year

The entire academic community was involved to ensure the continuity of education and operation of UW. With a few exceptions, until the end of 2020, university staff and students worked online. The summer exam session, the end of the academic year, admissions, and the commencement of teaching activities in the 2020/2021 academic year were all postponed. Due to the pandemic, support schemes for the academic community were introduced at the university, including teaching, remote education, and the development of IT tools for management of the university, as well as psychological support. Since June 2020, employees and doctoral candidates of the University of Warsaw have been offered free tests for the presence of coronavirus antibodies and for active infection with SARS-CoV-2.

Guide to the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at UW

The University of Warsaw published a “Guide to the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at the University of Warsaw”. The document is now available online in English and contains a list of rules and procedures at the UW, as well as recommendations and advice on preventing and reacting in situations of sexual harassment.

The guide and its recommendations and procedures reflect the ethical standards of the University of Warsaw, including mutual respect and equal treatment of all members of the academic community and non-acceptance of sexual harassment.

Treating people with mutual respect is a fundamental principle of the University of Warsaw community. Every person should feel safe studying and working on our campus. Sexual harassment is against the law because it is a form of discrimination on the grounds of gender. It is also against the values of University of Warsaw – indicate the authors of the publication.

The guide provides information on:

  • Definitions and examples of sexual harassment,
  • What to do when experienced sexual harassment or witnessed it,
  • The possibility of obtaining support, methods and procedures for reporting sexual harassment to university institutions,
  • Inappropriate and forbidden emotional and intimate relationships at the university.

The publication “Guide to the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at the University of Warsaw” was prepared by:

Earlier this year, University of Warsaw adopted its Gender Equality Plan – an action strategy for UW in the years 2020-2023. The document was created as a result of expert consultations reflecting good practices from European institutions. UW was the first university in Poland to adopt the GEP. The strategy envisages the implementation of the Anti-Discrimination Procedure, which will enable formal complaint proceedings both by the person who has experienced discrimination and by heads of the units to ensure safe reporting and prevention of sexual harassment and discrimination. More information >>
