Following the Senate of the University of Warsaw’s approval, on 29th June, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, UW Rector, signed the ordinance on establishing the Faculty of Medicine. Over 70 years passed for the University of Warsaw to restart the medical education.
The Ordinance No. 84 of the Rector of the University of Warsaw of 29th June 2022 on establishing the Faculty of Medicine is entering into force on 1st September 2022. The first students of medicine will commence their education on 1st October 2023.
The newly-established Faculty of Medicine is a milestone towards restoring the medical education at the University of Warsaw. It will be followed by programmes of the medical studies and an official application letter to the Minister of Education and Science asking to establish the studies of medicine at the University of Warsaw. The two working groups of the UW Rector are in charge of modelling the medical education at the university.
The Faculty of Medicine was part of the University of Warsaw between 1816-1949 with its history reaching back to 1809 (then: School of Medicine). Besides the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Warsaw comprised four other faculties: the Philosophical Faculty, the Theological Faculty, and the faculties of: Law, and Sciences and Fine Arts. Each faculty is represented by one of the five stars on the emblem of the University of Warsaw.
By the decision of the Council of Ministers, on 1st January 1950, the Faculty of Medicine and the Pharmaceutical Division formed the Medical Academy (now: the Medical University of Warsaw). Yet, the medical research works have still been continued at the UW. The newly-formed Faculty of Medicine will allow for further intensive works within medical and paramedical areas, as well as even better use of the scientific and didactic potential of the university.
“The research conducted at the University of Warsaw proves the strong connection between the humanities and medicine through interdisciplinary works. The university occupies a strong position in the physics, chemistry, biology, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, psychology, ethics and other social sciences and the humanities. Not only will the Faculty of Medicine benefit from the interdisciplinary fields of these sciences but also exploit medicine-associated areas,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, UW Rector, said.
Mission and aims
The mission of the Faculty of Medicine will focus on the structure and development of the Polish medicine in the scientific and practical contexts, including dynamic social and economic transformations, and current challenges and needs of the society. The education will be based on the Hippocratic principles of medicine: beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, and justice. The code of medical ethics and the development of the appropriate attitude to patients become key issues of the UW education and practice of young students of medicine.
The Faculty of Medicine will first aim at the effective education in medical sciences, to be gradually supplemented with health sciences. The programmes of the studies will ensure the highest possible theoretical, clinical and practical standards of the education to follow the European Union principles and requirements for medical professions.
New technologies and humanising medicine
The humanisation of medicine will be a distinguishing feature of the medical education at the University in Warsaw. The idea concentrates on the efficient and effective doctor-patient communication, attitude and relation.
The development of the research and didactics of the Faculty of Medicine will be based on the hitherto achievements of the UW researchers and scientists in the fields of the humanities, social sciences, exact and natural sciences, as well as the interdisciplinary expansion within research and education.
Also, the innovative new technologies in medicine will be used appropriately in the study programmes, especially those related with modern instruments and methods of calculation, artificial intelligence in medicine, as well as the other most recent scientific achievements of the UW faculties, and national and international research centres. This approach will facilitate evidence-based medicine in everyday practice, and more effective and successful methods of treatment.
The Faculty of Medicine will use progressive forms of didactics designed by new standards of medical education to be introduced soon by the Ministry of Education and Science, and the Ministry of Health. This process is implied by the changes in medicine due to the progress in technology as well as new social needs and challenges.
First, the multi-stage organisation of the Faculty of Medicine will include the study programme of medicine. Due to the specific standards of medical education, the first two years will be mainly based on the academics and facilities of the University of Warsaw, to be gradually completed by the physicians and other non-UW specialists. Simultaneously, the human resources and infrastructure of the UW will be adjusted to meet the standards of the clinical education.
Education of doctors-to-be
Starting 1st October 2023, the Faculty of Medicine will receive its first full-time medical students. Future plans include programmes of medicine in English, other medicine-related programmes, postgraduate studies in medicine and health sciences.
During the first years the Faculty of Medicine will be situated in the building of the University of Warsaw Biological and Chemical Research Centre at 101 Żwirki i Wigury Street, Warsaw. A separate building for didactic purposes of the Faculty of Medicine is planned as its final location, including further clinical infrastructural needs.

The UW academic teachers can register their courses for the winter semester of 2022/2023. The courses can be attended by the students and doctoral candidates of the 4EU+ Alliance five partner universities.
As part of the 4EU+ educational cooperation, the academic teachers of the University of Warsaw can offer their courses to the students and doctoral candidates of the five partner universities. The 4EU+ shared courses are available online or in a hybrid mode. Candidates can enrol in a course via the internet. The assessment is carried out online as well.
The courses are conducted either in English or in one of the languages of the 4EU+ Alliance partner universities: German, French, Italian, Danish or Czech. Subjects of the courses correspond to one of the 4EU+ Flagships.
Proposals for the shared courses should be submitted by 4th September 2022 via the Google Sheet.

Since the 2020/2021 academic year, the academics of 19 faculties and other units of the University of Warsaw have made a total number of 144 shared courses available to 4EU+ participants. Over 200 students from all five 4EU+ partner universities have attended the courses offered by the UW.

In the winter semester 2022/2023, online courses organised by 4EU+ member universities will be available for students. The registration for the University of Milan, Heidelberg University and Charles University courses is open now. Two online courses are also offered by the University of Geneva.
In the winter semester 2022/2023, five 4EU+ Alliance member universities (the University of Warsaw, Charles University, Sorbonne University, Heidelberg University and the University of Milan) will make their online courses available to all 4EU+ students. A new member of the Alliance, the University of Geneva, also made its offer.
Courses at Sorbonne University
The course catalogues will be published gradually according to the academic calendars of each institution. Sorbonne University is the first to open the registration for students. There are four courses to choose from:
- Green Label I (in French, for BA, 2nd year students) – registration is open until the end of July;
- Green Label II (in French, for BA, 3rd year students) – registration is open until the end of July;
- Structural and Mechanistic Enzymology (in French and English, for MA, 2nd year students) – registration is open until 10th September;
- Strategic Management and Intrapreneurship (in English, for BA, 3rd year students) – registration is open until 11th September.

Important information for students planning to take online courses offered by 4EU+ universities >>
Before taking a course offered by an Alliance partner university, the student should sign a 4EU+ Learning Agreement in his/her Faculty/Unit in order to determine and approve whether the course selected by the student from the 4EU+ offer can be recognised as part of the student’s degree programme (e.g. elective course, OGUN) or whether the course will be indicated as a form of an extracurricular activity.

On 29th June the Senate of the University of Warsaw adopted “The University of Warsaw Rector’s Annual Report 2021” unanimously. The report covers significant data on the UW, e.g. research, education, international cooperation, academic mobility, social and cooperate outreach, finances and investments. The document also presents information about the university functioning under special conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The report is the second this kind document prepared in the term of Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak as the Rector of the University of Warsaw.
“The year of 2021 was not easy. However, the commitment and joint work of the university community allowed for fulfilling the mission of the University of Warsaw, continuing strategic initiatives and conducting research and education on a high level. On many months of pandemic and pandemic-related restrictions we hoped that the worst had passed. Yet, in 2022, we faced an outbreak of war in Ukraine. Our effort and commitment prove that we are able to face difficulties and help efficiently the ones in need. I am thankful to the whole university community, as well as its each member, for the cooperation and engagement they have undertaken to secure smooth functioning and development of our Alma Mater,” Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, UW Rector, said.
University in numbers
In 2021, the University of Warsaw comprised 37 404 students and 2 127 doctoral candidates, including 2 689 foreigners. Diplomas were awarded to 9 109 graduates. The university employs 7 815 people, including 3 974 academic teachers.
The first-cycle, second-cycle and uniform studies recruited 32 100 candidates, including 2 388 foreigners. The UW researchers participated in 78 projects financed from the Horizon 2020 and 1 339 projects covered from national funds. The university worked together with over 350 international entities from more than 70 countries under direct bilateral cooperation agreements. In 2021, the university’s revenue amounted to 1.8 bln zł.
The report also presents scientific achievements of the UW academics, e.g. the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” Programme, the 4EU+ Alliance, the multi-annual development plan, as well as the initiatives related with the support and development of the academic community.
The report provides information on the university during pandemic, remote education and work, coronavirus testing and vaccination, as well as psychological support. Also, one section features the research projects related with pandemic in various scientific aspects such as COVID-19 treatment, medical recording, economic aspects of the crisis.
As the report is prepared in Polish, generally, the selected chapters are duly translated into English: Executive Summary, Basic Data on the University in 2021, and annexes.
