Research profile of the group members: environmental analysis; environmental monitoring (biomonitoring and sample banking); determination of traces of “heavy” metals (Pt, Pd, Tl, Zn, Cd, Cu, Ct, Pb) and metalloids (As) in environmental samples (water, soil, sediments, food, plant and animal tissues); phytoremediation processes; waste management; chemical/physical speciation and fractionation; preparation of new control materials; development of sampling procedures of water and solid samples; optimization of sample pretreatment step (sampling, milling, homogenization), digestion/mineralization (microwave assisted) and UV/Vis digestion (chemically or catalytically accelerated), application of solid phase extraction and liquid chromatography in trace speciation analysis; application of ICP MS and voltammetric determination in total content and speciation analysis/fractionation (water, soil, sediment).

Research subjects:

  • Recognition of defense mechanisms developed by plants, e.g. white mustard cultivated in the presence of high concentrations of As, Tl, Cd, Pt, Pd and Rh.
  • Fractionation studies applied for evaluation of mobility and bioavailability of harmful and nutritious substances from soil and sediment samples.
  • Fractionation in suspended particle matter separated from water ecosystems. Speciation analysis of As, Cr and Tl in water.
  • Reagent-free photodegradation of organic compounds used as a method of preparation of water samples for speciation analysis (HPLC with UV-Vis detection, ICP MS, voltammetry).
  • Study of the stability of speciation (Tl, Cr, As) during sampling and sample pretreatment.
  • Application of stripping voltammetry for trace analysis (below ppb level) of hazardous elements (Sn, Cd, Tl, Pb, Cr, As, Pt, Pd, Rh) in natural samples.
